Epilogue: No Pictures to Burn

Elka Freeman slowly stepped out of her car, black hair put up nicely and her eyes glared over with shock and horror. She slammed the door and took a few steps toward what appeared the be ruins. “Is this… the right address?” she stared in dismay. Weeks before, she had set up a business appointment with a hip band lyricist in this town. Now, all she saw was a house in ashes at the meeting spot.

A man with dark glasses was walking on the sidewalk and spotted her. “Hello, ma’am. What can I do ya fer?” he said with the rumble of a mountainman, sharply contrasted with his shady hat and business uniform.

“The name’s Freeman. I was here to see the hip lyricist Jaybelle Gothenica. Where does she live?” Elka shuffled about nervously. The townfolk were so straightforward in Riverview.

The man pulled off his glasses in shock. “You’re… not from around here, are you?” Elka nodded nervously. “Well, my lady,” he said in a whisper, “This was her place. But it’s been vacant for a week, now.”

“They moved?” Elka was confused. Surely her client would have called!

“No…” he said with a darkness to his voice, “The whole family burned to death in a tragic fire. She, her husband and two children. I’m… sorry.”

Elka dropped her suitcase. She had seen a lot working for the Doo Peas Corp., but nothing like this. The man dipped his hat solemnly and departed, leaving Elka to herself…

My save folder got completely wiped, so I can’t even retrieve the save. I’m sorry to see the Gothenicas go; I became pretty close to Stephen and I wanted him to be heir. I suppose this is how it goes. From now on I’m backing my save files. Thanks for being such loyal fans! -Lovely Lumi

Eight: Life Goes On

Antoinette worked hard in school. She nearly got straight A’s – language arts, science, mathematics, geography… The only thing that troubled her was history. Her best friend always got bad grades, and she was convinced that this was because the teacher hated him. She even compared papers – his was brilliant, yet he got a D. When she asked the teacher why her friend got a bad grade, he shrugged and said, “I grade on the curve.” Nettie was not convinced by this answer. She knew that this was not right. And she intended to make that clear.

Jay disapproved of  Nettie’s action, but Travis encouraged her. “Fight for what you believe in sweetie! And never give up,” were his usual words. Jaybelle only looked at him with a frown. She believed that Nettie should not be raised to fight authority. No way she wanted her sweet little girl to grow up always in trouble like Jay did.

Things were going well on the opposite end of the pendulum,  however. Stephen was catching on to things so quick – he could already talk and he walked like a little gymnast. And his vocabulary was growing so quickly. “He’s our little genius,” Cherry commented one day while bringing Jay some paperwork. Jay just smiled. Geniuses were good in science and arithmetic. So far, Stephen was just a bubbly and vibrant baby. Maybe one day he could be the smart cookie in class, but that was far off.

With all happening, Jay couldn’t help but feel a little stressed. Sure, Nettie was doing well in school. But this boy came over every day to study. Antoinette was growing up just a little too fast, Jay thought. Then there was Stephen’s future to consider. She tried all she could to prepare him for life – books, TV programs, games, software… she did it all. And the thought of not being able to have more kids with Travis weighed heavily. Of course it was possible to get pregnant again, she supposed. But Travis couldn’t handle another, and Jaybelle was certainly faithful to her husband. With her job on top of it all, there was a lot to consider.

Seven: In a School Daze

Life went on as normal for the Gothenicas. Jay swept and cooked and practiced guitar in her spare hours of the maternity leave, but most of her time was spent with Stephen and Nettie. Travis was more tired than ever from work; he pushed long hours as a squad leader, and his body was getting too old to handle the physical stress. Days were long and boring, especially since Antoinette refused to play with others. Jaybelle was almost going to pass out from the demanding babies.

Thank goodness, they thought, that Nettie’s birthday was not far away. She would finally sleep in a bed and be caught up in school. Perhaps the social aspects of elementary school would fix her antisocial attitude. Jay finally found enough time to draw up party plans, though she had trouble working it around Travis’ crazy hours.

They now were more financially stable. Jay was not progressing much in the music career due to her maternity leaves. Even though they had promoted her to band manager, she hardly ever did her full job nowdays, with her assistant, Cherry Kanto, doing most of the work. Cherry was a very sweet young lady, and she just loved the kids.  She especially loved Nettie. “She’ll be a little heartbreaker when she’s older,” Cherry said with a smile one day.

Nettie’s birthday came at last. She aged up – and oh, dear Lumi, she was pretty! Jaybelle gave her a pretty dress and braided her hair.

Sweet Little Antoinette

The next morning was Monday – a school day – and Antoinette was slightly nervous of being the ‘new kid’. Travis assured her that such a pretty girl like her was sure to make friends quickly. Antoinette smiled and skipped off to the bus. Now Travis, on his day off, and Jay had some time to spend with Stephen, who was now a toddler. They spent hours teaching him to walk. When Nettie got home, she went straight to homework while Jaybelle prepared a dinner salad. Travis took a shower and readied the table for their first ever family meal.

Antoinette does her homework

That night, Jay was tucking Nettie in. “Mommy, why is daddy so old?” she asked. Jaybelle knew this was coming, and tried her best to explain. “Daddy is a lot older than me, sweetie,” she began, “When we married I didn’t really think about his age. We loved each other, and that’s all that counts.” Jay frowned and continued, “But we have to remember that daddy won’t last much longer. We have to be ready for him to pass on any time. He loves you so much, dear. He’s just glad he lived long enough to see you do well in school.” Nettie began to cry. “We must be strong,” Jay assured her, “Good night.”

Six: The Elf Tells of Birthdays

Antoinette quickly caught on to walking and talking. She didn’t talk much, though. When words came out, they were short and to-the-point. She spent all her time in the nursery, playing with her dolls. This didn’t bother Jaybelle as much as it did Travis. “A young girl should be playful and talkative!” he warned. “She’s just going through a phase,” Jay tried to calm him, but the thought of something being wrong with his little Nettie frightened him.

Soon it was time for Travis’ birthday. He invited all their friends. Everyone had a great time. Then, he blew out the candles. As the transition began, Jaybelle almost began to cry. She loved Travis with all her heart, but they were so far apart in age. Now that he was and elder, it would begin to show. She gave him a birthday kiss, but her heart was still sad. She wanted more children, but that was out of the question for someone like Travis…

A few mornings later, after a nice warm shower, Jay’s water broke! They rushed to the hospital. After hours of labor, the doctors handed Jaybelle a bright, beaming baby boy! “What shall his name be?” she pondered. They hadn’t really considered names during the pregnancy. On an impulse, Travis signed the name ‘Stephen’ on the paperwork. Jay agreed that the name was cute – and Stephen Gothenica joined the family.

That night was very abnormal. Jaybelle was up and down with both babies crying.

Jay’s adulthood birthday had passed a few days earlier, and she stared at her sleeping children. Her life passed in her head. as she gazed at her little loves, pride swelled in her heart. Who cared if she couldn’t have another? She had two perfect kids right in front of her.

Five: Terrible Twos

Now that Travis had a solid hold on his military job, they had enough money to do some renovating. “No dramatic changes,” Jay demanded. “No problem, Jaybird,” Travis smiled. he went to work and started to renovate the large, bare attic. He built a wall and installed a door, and Jay decorated. They now had an extra room. Jay has always wanted more kids, so she wanted to plan for the future. Not, now, of course, but perhaps when Antoinette was older…

Now that Nettie, as they called their daughter, was getting older, Jay wanted to look more modest and set a good example. Rummaging through the second-hand shop, she picked out some floods and a spiceberry turtleneck.  Nettie’s birthday was coming up again, and they finally had enough money to celebrate the event. Travis invited all his work friends. The party was a blast.

Antoinette finally aged up, of course. the family was quite happy with the outcome, as she only became cuter. All of Travis’ fellow soldiers were impressed – he had finally raised a family, despite how people mocked him in the past. Maybe things were turning around for Travis’ social life…

The two happy parents celebrated that night with a little ‘alone time’. A few mornings later, Jaybelle was elated with the news: she’s pregnant again!

I apologize for lack of pictures. My launcher is acting strangely again. It should be fixed soon… I hope.

Four: Arch Duchess of Austria, Queen of France

The sun rose over Riverview. Yes, it was time… for the wedding! Jay changed into a humble dress and they awaited the few guests to come to the house. It wasn’t an extravagant wedding. Travis had the rings made by his handy brother and Jaybelle only spent money on the simple salad they were serving. The lovely couple would now be forever in union, though poor, but happy. They conversed with guests, but finally it was time to exchange rings. I now pronounce you Jaybelle and Travis Gothenica!

The ceremony was beautiful. Guests enjoyed the salad. Jaybelle and Travis were finally married. Everything went fine, until…

Uh oh! What was that? Contractions. Pain. The water has broken. The baby was coming! Guests cleared the way as Travis and Jay rushed out the door to the hospital. After hours of labor, the doctors came in… with a beautiful baby girl! Welcome to Riverview, Antoinette Gothenica.

Three: Travis the Train

Jaybelle shot up a few mornings later with her stomach turning and tumbling. It must have been the mac and cheese. Panicking, she walked  ran hysterically into the bathroom, vomiting. Ugh. This was not good. Too disgusted to eat, she called up Travis, her new boyfriend, to see if he could comfort her in her time of need. Loving as he was, he came over right away. “Who else is going to take care of you, Jaybird?” Oh, how sweet. He called her by her pet-name, Jaybird.

“Come in!” Jay shouted as the door bell rang. “My love,” he whispered to her when he sat on the couch by her, “What can I do?’ “Nothing,” she smiled. But her stomach turned again. Time to vomit. As she went into the bathroom, a thought occurred to her. Her period she have come by now. She decided to run a few… tests. Yes, what she feared was true.

Couche

She came out and looked Travis in the eye. “I have something to tell you…” she started. As she explained, he was shocked. “It can’t be,” he sighed. “But please, I need you!” Jay pleaded. Travis smiled. “Of course, dear. I’ll always be here for you.”

They talked for a long time. Jay finally decided that if he were to be a father, he needed to get himself situated and moved in before the baby came. He agreed, and before they knew it, it was time for him to go to work. “I’ll be back tonight with my things,” Travis promised as he left. Worn out, Jay grabbed a bowl of soup and went straight to bed.

The next morning’s events confirmed it. Her lower stomach was beginning to swell, and she knew that this was it. No more happy-go-lucky single’s life. She had to be a mom, a mature adult. The only thing that kept her going was she loving look in Travis’ eyes. “Morning, love,” he chirped. “Time for a shower…” Jay groaned at him, “Can you make breakfast while I clean up?” After a hot shower and some good grape pancakes, she headed the grocery store and ran other errands. Meanwhile, Travis was busy setting up the nursery.

Days passed as Travis and Jaybelle got situated. Morning after morning he swooned and floated around his love, oblivious to anything else. Of course he thought of his new son or daughter, but mostly he though of his little ‘Jaybird’. His sweet dove. The song in his heart. As they visited schools to see the offered daycare systems, he couldn’t hold it in any longer. “Will you marry me, Jaybelle Gothenica?” he blurted out. Jay turned red. Tears streamed down her cheeks. “Of course,” she whispered. after all, how could she refuse?

Of course they thought of names and such for the new child. They planned the wedding to be soon before Jay was due. They settled upon Antoinette for a girl or Aristotle for a boy. Some other favorites were Charlotta, Maxis and Analie.

Two: She Needed Somebody

Jaybelle awoke to her alarm early that morning and decided to hit the pool. As she rode in the taxi on the way, a though came to her. “I’m missing something…” she sighed. Jay realized she needed somebody, but not just any person. She needed a boyfriend. As she got the the Swim Club, she changed into her swimwear quickly and spied the waters. Ah, yes, what kind town people, some she saw as she was a kid- Wait, who’s that hottie? She quickly went over to converse.

Travis

Jay tried to converse with him at the pool.

They swapped phone numbers and Jay commenced step one. After a flirt or two, he had to go. “I never got your name!” Jay called as he walked out the door. “It’s Travis!” he yelled back. Travis. That was a name to remember.

After swimming for a few hours, Jay came to the inevitable: she couldn’t pay for dinner that night. She needed a job. Guitar in hand, she ran to the theatre for tryouts. With talent but no refinement, as they said, she settled on the lowly job of “Fan”. Hey, it pays bills, don’t it? With a little startout money she headed for the bar – she needed a few tips for dinner that night, or at least discounts on the food. As she came in, the owner greeted her with a usual welcome. She set up her guitar and began to strum.

Her gig 1

Guitar

The following evening was long and boring. Jay remembered Travis and his scratched down number. Maybe he could ease her boredom. Hoping, she dialed him up on her cell. Ring! Ring! Ring! “Hello?” To Jay’s surprise, he had just been trying to think of something to do, and the promise of warm food and hip music sounded good to him. “I’ll be over in a little while,” he told her. Click! Now she had to make dinner. Se whipped up some easy mac and cheese and set the tone for romantic – after all, this was her chance to finally get a boyfriend – by dimming the lights and putting on a little jazz. The doorbell rang. She tensed.

As he walked in, she decided to lay it on thick. “I need a boyfriend…” Jay started. Travis understood… maybe a little too well. He motioned toward the bedroom, but Jaybelle shook her head. “No, no, this is going too fast.” But he insisted. He seduced. And before she knew it…

One: Grandma’s Estate

NEW CHARACTER INFO: JAYBELLE GOTHENICA
Traits: Neat, Great Kisser, Ambitious, Virtuoso, Family-Oriented
Favorites: Green, Electronica,  Key Lime Pie
Lifetime Goal: Rock Star

Jaybelle is the loverly daughter of Chancelor and Margaret Gothenica. She grew up with her grand-parents on a lovely estate in Riverview until she was age 16. Recently she got a call with shocking news: a huge fire erupted in the house, killing both grandma and grandpa and burning half of the household to ruins. Then the man on the phone told her something even more surprising. She, Jaybelle, the only heir, was receiving 40,000 simoleons plus the half-decent estate. Could it be true? Jay began packing right away.

As she arrived at her childhood home she became less elated. The roof was caving in. The paint was peeling. Half of the place was just a wooden frame. She could never live here. But, as though the ghosts of her grandparents were haunting her, Jay knew what she had to do. Reluctantly, she picked up the phone and place an appointment for a 40,000 simoleon repair – almost as much as the net-worth of the whole house. Jay knew her grandma would want to old place to live on, and she respected that.

Weeks later, after staying at her cousin’s house, Jay received another phone call. “It’s done,” the repair man informed her, and she promptly grabbed her backs and headed to Riverview. This is where the adventure begins.

Jaybelled arrived at the place in the evening. She placed her things and looked around, but it wasn’t long until her stomach began to growl. “How about a nice tour of the kitchen?” Jay reasoned with herself, and off she went.

Preparing Autumn Salad

Jaybelle prepares a tasty dinner salad.

After dinner, she was already tired. “Time to hit the bedroom,” Jay yawned. She climbed the long stairway to the upper levels. It was magnificent, just like when she was a kid. The repair men had done a wonderful job. She opened the door to the master bedroom and lied on the fancy bed. Sleep came quickly.

Jaybelle is sleeping...

Jaybelle quickly fell asleep.
